Just a general question - when you renew a passport, the passport office will apparently cut a corner or two off the front cover when you recieve your new passport, correct? A woman has just walked into our office [with dementia], saying that the front cover of her passport - unaltered on Friday - was cut almost in half by the passport office yesterday. However, we didn't think they did that until the new passport was provided; this woman hasn't paid any money and we're not even sure whether she's lodged the renewal forms. As expected, being a gubment office, we're not getting much help from the passports office. Has anyone got any idea as to what might have happened? There was still 3 months validity on the passport, and we're not sure whether she's just lost any memory of paying for a new one, or whether her passport has been cut by an evil passport-destroying mastermind. Also, we were under the impression that the passport office only cut the corners off, but almost half of the front cover has been cut.
Anyone have any ideas?? We're all mystified by this woman and her mysteriously cut passport!

Ok, I give up. It's only November, but I am already lost and confused about the whole Xmas gift thing. Yeah, it's early, but... For now, I am stuck in a country town where things are expensive and there really isn't much choice, and therefore this year I am doing my Xmas shopping online, and as delivery takes time, I'd better get this all over with in the next couple of weeks (on the plus side, December will be stress-free, yay!).
The question is, as always - what does one give a nice but extraordinarily boring and shy father-in-law? (I usually spend Xmas lunch with my husband's family, and therefore can't get out of this gift giving.) To explain:
The man is a typical ex-working class Aussie in his early 60s, now a public servant nearing retirement. He doesn't read, not at all; doesn't have any music or thing that he is passionate about; he downloads whatever he wishes to watch and listen to, so giving CDs/DVDs is pointless; whatever tools he needs for house renovations he already has (so a cordless drill is out); he has no hobbies to speak of. Actually, no, he is interested in hydroponics, and therefore has all the bits and gadgets that he needs for that, and he likes to bbq dead meat, so again, he has everything that he needs. He has all dumb house gadgets that he ever wanted, so no universal remote controls. He has no fashionable inclinations, doesn't carry a laptop, or a bag, adores his ancient wallet, already has whatever electronic gadgets he likes. He also already has a Leatherman, and doesn't wear cufflinks. I think he has half a dozen ties, and that's enough. He drinks rarely and doesn't care for nice wine / liquor / spirits, I'd rather drink those myself.
The in-laws already went travelling a couple of years ago, that was an easy Xmas, but now we've exhausted the whole luggage tags/ passport wallets/ inflatable pillow theme.
I've also already exhausted the entire food group thing last year - we were very broke, and every one in the family got a mountain of Chinese takeaway boxes full of home-made fudge, biscuits and sweets. (They were a bit confused, but at least put on appreciative faces).
So, what to give... Yet another bbq set?? A dull gift card to Myer or something? Kangaroo-skin beer bottle holder that will be thrown out by February? NOVELTY SOCKS?!!
Argh. Please help! Any website links are very welcome! :)

Hello brisneyland,
Odd query, but I'm interested in skeleton mounting, and am wondering if anyone has any information or related groups I should know about. The animals in question are a dead crow and possum in my street (one killed by car, the other by power lines).
Anything at all would be helpful, even book recommendations.
Thanks

This isn't particularly Brisbane related, but I know a lot of you women will appreciate this post!
Christmas aka silly-party-season is upon us. If you're anything like me, you try to squeeze your feet into uncomfortably high yet terrifically sexy shoes that looks a million dollars - until you're drunk and exhausted and traipsing through the city in search of a cab.
Give me a few days for these to be delivered, then I can point and laugh at you as I pull these little fold-up-flats out of my purse and watch as the little square they came with magically expands to form a tote for carrying my heels.

I just ordered a pair - it's like they were *made for me*! And they're only $16.99 [including delivery] and come in three colours [black, silver and pink - I went with glitzy silver].GENIUS! I can't believe I have lived for 26 years on this Earth and not had a pair of these.

Brisneylanders I come to you with a request for a good podiatrist on the East of Brisbane [specifically near to Hawthorne]. I've looked through the medical tags and nothing was mentioned there, and I also went through the medical rating website someone posted earlier in the year and found no joy.
( For those icked out by feet feel free to ignore this cut. )
Ideally I'd like to have somewhat presentable feet for Summer where I'm likely to be wearing thongs and sandles. Please Brisneyland, help me out!

The drill is, of course, to contact the nearest police station, and leave 000 for those in crisis.
In Brisbane, a good way to do that is ring the twenty-four hour District Communication Centre on (07) 3364 6464, who will divert you to an officer in your area. TTY for hearing impaired 3364 4655.
I'm posting this because in the early hours of Sunday morning, I tried googling "Police Station Brisbane" and had two numbers I found ring out with a third one disconnected. You are supposed to be diverted from unattended numbers, according to the officer who is following up on my feedback, so it seems I was particularly unlucky.
It gave me occasion though to comb the Queensland Police website, which has interesting and useful information. For instance, next year there will be operational a nation wide non-urgent contact number, in addition to the District Communication Centres.
There are various programs and advice sheets, which along with a chat to an officer, helped resolve my anxiety over a small incident at a party. http://www.police.qld.gov.au/programs/personalSafety/situationalAdvice/
Also, I discovered there is an inner city evacuation plan should there ever be a disaster; and that there are a depressing number of missing persons.

After seeing so many foodie posts on here, I figured it would be a good idea to keep some of them in one place, so brisbane_eats is now up and running! Post about anything food and Brisbane related; where you buy fresh bread from on the weekend, where to find the best fish and chips in Brisbane, which restaurant stocks your favourite wine. If the recession is restricting you from eating out, tell us where you buy your organic produce from, or which deli has the best salami and cheese for picnicking. Ask questions if you can't find specific products, and check the tags - once the community is active, I'm sure they will hold a wealth of information!
(mods, I've also posted a link back here on the userinfo page for general brisneyland info)

Does anybody know a bakery in the CBD or the Valley that does a good baked cheescake (also sometimes known as a New York cheesecake)?
PLEASE don't recommend The Cheesecake Shop - I have ordered baked cheesecake from them twice before now and when I have gone to get it each time it's been a plain, ordinary, unbaked cheesecake. Very nice ordinary unbaked cheesecake, true, but still, I want a baked cheesecake.
Help?

Hi Brisneyland.
I know someone posted recently chasing SD-RAM - I don't have any, but I DO have some of this old DDR-RAM here that I have no use for. If anyone wants it, you're welcome to it.
Specs: 2x256MB "Nanya" brand PC3200 (400Mhz) DDR-RAM (184-pin DIMMs). These came out of a Dell Inspiron 3000.

Anyone with computer issues, don't, whatever you do, contact Personal Computer Solutions.
I'm currently in a ding-dong battle with them, since their technician seems to have cheerfully overcharged me for replacing a motherboard (which I needed), upgrading my OS (which I didn't, but can probably live with in the end) and wiping chunks of data (which I certainly didn't). Apparently, because I had the temerity to call them about it and explain that their proposed solutions didn't make sense, let alone solve the problem, they don't want to deal with me again.
Their competitors, needless to say, are loving this. Assuming I can get my lovely Turkish pop music back, this will all turn into a bad memory, but it definitely seems like we're talking cowboy operators here.

Notes augmented
We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!
Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)
New FCK fixes rich text editor!
- We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
- When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
- RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
- An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
- The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
LiveJournal Cares
We’re pleased to introduce you to lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.
Papered in postcards

We've received postcards all the way from Germany, Finland, and Canada and from all over the US, including Texas, Florida, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Indiana, Hawaii, and Oklahoma just to name just a handful. We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Please keep the love coming for one more week by writing to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be drawing the names of ten random contributors next Thursday to win paid account credits!

It is 7 months old, in good condition, and was only really slept on for half that time.

Here's a photo, unfortunately a bit blurry but you get the idea. I'm selling the futon only, no base.

Having only recently become one of those Organised People my mother always wanted me to be, I'm on the hunt for a [preferably matching] address book and 2010 planner. Any idea where I can find these in the CBD? I'd love something that will last my clumsiness, so leather-bound would be a plus, but I'm not sure where to start looking. I was thinking about Kikki-K, but I've heard that's terribly expensive... any ideas?
EDIT! I suddenly remembered I had another question, but didn't want to make another post ;o) It's my partner's birthday early next month, and we have a tradition of going out for a special meal - so Brisneylanders, what is your favourite fancy-pants restaurant? I expect a bill of $250+ for the two of us, and a nice wine list would be super! I was considering Cha Cha Char [everybody loves steak!] but after hearing reviews of terrible services, and with a wine list full of horribly inflated prices, I've decided against it. Where can we get a solid meal, excellent service, and a romantical atmosphere? for reference, we've previously done Tukka, The Lab Bar, Sono, and Olivettos
EDIT! the second So I cracked and went to check out Kikki-K, and ended up buying an awesome red leather planner for $30, and a red cloth-bound address book for $35. The quality seems great, and it wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. I'm still hunting for the perfect restaurant - all of your suggestions have been awesome! I think I may need to draw a name out of a hat to choose ;o)
On that note - if I were to start a "Brisbane Eats" community, would anyone be interested in joining? I'm thinking it might be useful to condense all foodie-reviews/recommendations in one spot, from cheap and cheerful through to silver service. It sounds like there are a few foodies in here! What do you reckon?

EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP.
Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!!
Thanks mhwest and dnewhall for helping out!
---
On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.
Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.
We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!
As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Hi Brisneyland!
I'm going to a costume party in about a week and a half, and I wanted to put together a Lolita costume before then. (Not lolita in terms of Nabokov, in therms of the Japanese/cosplayer fashion.) I'm not too picky and I don't need any fancy, brand name type stuff, but I was wondering if there were some places in the city I could find the kind of style of clothing. I know the internet's probably a good place to find this sort of stuff but I've left it too late, unless someone can recommend a site with super-fast shipping.
Question number two - I am also attending a party with a James Bond theme. Where can I find formal-dress like class for hopefully, less expense? Would DFO be worth checking out?
Thanks!

Dear all,
I enjoy my comic books. Or, at least, am starting to enjoy my comic books. ;)
However, being a full-time employee on the west side, it is sometimes quite a hassle to get into the City to go to the comic book store.
I was wondering, (1) if there are any comic book stores on the west side (Kenmore area and beyond), or (2) how people get them delivered to their house (is there a mailing list in Brisbane or something? I don't know ....).
You will have to excuse my ignorance in this, but I hope you can help. :)

looking for cheap chef-jackets somewhere in the CBDish (valley...west end... etc) or chermside. If it makes a difference, it needs to be black and preferably long-sleeved. So looking for wholesalers who are open to the public, I guess. I know there is one on Water st in Fort Valley, but I don't know if they are open to the public...
thanks :)
EDIT: thanks everyone! we actually found one by chance in a 2nd hand shop >< but we have to get another at some point down the line, so, feel free to keep sending in suggestions :)

I'm after some help with Centrelink and postgrad study.
I'm an external student in a Masters degree at UNE and next year I'll be taking a course load that I understand is sufficient enough to be considered full time by Centrelink.
Also, the masters is a coursework degree, a Commonwealth supported place.
I called Centrelink to ask if my course was eligible and a very uncertain-sounding person told me she didn't think it was, but that from 2012 all Masters degrees will be eligible.
Needless to say, I have some doubts as to if she's correct. And I can't seem to find any useful information on this on centrelink's website about how to go about this.
I've heard "3rd party" stories about people arguing Centrelink into paying them for study when the majority of the degree is by coursework, not research thesis.
I'm a little lost as to where to turn to and would like to know where I can go to see if I'm eligible... my job finishes at the end of the year and I'd like to know exactly how little money I'm going to be living on!!
Does anyone here do postgrad coursework and receive Centrelink?
Ultimately I would prefer to work part time than deal with centrelink, but I would like to know if I have any sort of back up available to me.
Thanks...

Hi all ^^
I remember here a while back somebody posted an entry about an Eating Disorder help group, that met in a hall or something, weekly, somewhere in Brisbane.
Does anybody remeber this post? It was tagged (I think) but I can't find the tag -_-
Help finding it would be greatly appreciated =)
Or if anybody knows of any other Eating Disorder help groups that would be great too!
Thanks Brisneyland xxxx

Hi there, just thought I'd drop in on the jerks that played a role in a dear friend of mine deciding to down 30 Valium pills with a liquid codeine chaser a few weeks ago. Good to see that that qualifies as 'joking about suicide 'round here 'cause me and the rest of her friends and family sure as fuck can't see the funny side. The poor girl has suffered from debilitating pain and illness for years and is extremely shy. She takes a huge step onside her comfort zone to try to help herself and others make some new friends and all she's met with is bullshit. Oh, and mocking and abusing the mentally-ill real classy that it's 2009 people have some sensitivity. I'm happy to report that MP survived without any permanent damage but maybe your next victim won't be so lucky so it's time you started watching your virtual mouths. It's a real shame that a site that has so much potential to be a great resource for Brisbanites feels the need to maintain itself in a way that makes me ashamed to live in the same city as some of you.

So I work for a not for profit organisation called Rosies. Like most not for profits, it is a religious organisation, but it has a very strict no-preaching policy - we think that's an abuse of power. (I like to say that up front, because I think it's important).
We run street vans at night, we do prison and court visitation - and we have over 500 volunteers State-wide.
This makes for a lot of paperwork.
We're currently looking for administration volunteers. Are you interested in volunteering a day a week in our office? Duties are mostly data entry - volunteer details and outreach debrief sheets. It's not very exciting, but you get a warm fuzzy feeling from it.
If you're interested in finding out more, please drop me an email at reception(at)rosies.org.au.
Cheers, cAt
