I'd really like to learn more about art, and art history.

I know the Brisbane Institute of Art does an art history course, but it is astonishingly expensive (to me, anyway).

Does anyone know of another college or TAFE who offers something similar?

Does anyone else get the impression that renting has improved since a year ago?? (or at least plateaued?)

Last year our rent went up $90 when we finished our lease and the next person took over. This year it doesn't seem to have skyrocketed quite so drastically. Just curious what your experiences are.

Hello Brisbane Friends!

I'm wondering if you can help me look for caterers for my wedding to be held on 12th June. I'm after a buffet dinner, served in the hall we have hired. I would love to hear who you went through and if you were happy by the end of it :)

Also have any of you used any of these catering services, and if so, what did you think?

Thank you!

That's not a metaphor.

Best place to have cheesecake?

A friend of mine is such a health nut that she never eats cake; but she's decided that on her birthday, she'll have a little piece of cheesecake.

Where is the best place to get a piece? I'm not looking to buy a whole cheesecake, like at the Cheesecake Factory, just to take her to a cafe and have one piece.

Thanks!

OMG peoples. I have to share my pain (which I'm sure a lot of you are feeling anyway), the fares went up for my train commute on my Go Card. BY 50c, an entire 50c more expensive per trip, from Zone 3 to 1. I hear it's more expensive with paper tickets.

What the hell?! I expect things would get expensive with the building of the new lines, they always do, but 50c (with each trip)!!! *cries*

Subject:Scam Alert... Scam Alert...
Posted by:windtear.
Time:8:59 pm.
Mood: tired.
My fellow Brisneylanders, if you receive a letter from an American company called Carrington, Winthrop and York, DON'T RESPOND. The letter will say you have won AUD $3,165,141.00 in unawarded prizes, that these prizes must be claimed and that you have to send them a $30.00 processing fee. It is a scam. You'll not see a penny. Tell everyone you know, because you know there are people who'll not realise it's a lie unless they are told.

(Don't worry, I haven't been burned. This evening when I got home from gym, my fellow Brisneylanders, I found a letter in my mailbox. It came from the US and looked rather like a Reader's Digest Sweepstakes letter. I opened it, because I'm always amused by those letters and it's interesting to see what they're spruiking this time. It was this letter instead. Even if I hadn't seen that it was a scam from the letter itself [real prizes turn up on the doorstep, the people involved don't ask for 'processing fees'; a US prize translating into a flat, no-cents amount in another currency, ha yeah right; ditto the 'processing fee'; and when did I enter a US based competition anyway? Oh yeah, that's right, I didn't], enclosed with the letter addressed to me was a second, utterly identical letter, right down to the 'signature', except for the addressee. I'm sorry, Ms Linh Tieu, I will not be forwarding this letter on to you, but somehow I think you'll survive.)

I googled "Carrington, Winthrop and York", and I got a consumer awareness board from India, warning that it was a scam (but apparently the sum offered there was over 7 million), as well as another consumer awareness website saying the company is suspected of supporting scammers. Looks like they have left the land of Bollywood and are now gunning for our wallets.

So spread the word, please!

Mood: anxious.
Hallo Brisneys! Back again [it didn't take me long to realise I had another question] and looking for advice.

I think I may have talked myself out of loving my current wedding dress. It's pretty and it's girly and I really do love the dress... I just don't think I love it on me. It's a bit too formal and over the top, and I'd really love a more casual tea-party style dress. I don't actually know if I can afford to buy another dress, but I'd love to look at some options for a fun party dress, and I was wondering if anyone here can point me in the right direction?

I have no intention of getting the full-skirted, formal white gown - I'm looking for a 50's style swing dress, tea-length, ideally in silver/green. If you know where I could find a dress that matches that decription, or you know of a dress-maker who might be able to come up with something for me, please let me know! Also, does anyone have a *rough* idea of what a dress like that might cost to have made? Simple fabrics, simple lines etc - I don't want anything over the top, but I just can't sew myself :o(

Around the Paddington/Rosalie area would be great, though at the moment I'm considering Home Store & Cafe on Stewart Road in Ashgrove. Not Sassafras - been there before and would like to try something different! Thanks!

I am moving from Brisbane in early February - and as such have to give up my gym membership.

$35 a fortnight - Go Health at Virginia.

It's a great gym, I really enjoy it. Plenty of classes, PT options, never too busy (have never had to wait to get on any machines, ever).

I will obviously pay the transfer fees if you are interested - just msg me here if you need any other details :)

Looking for one of those places where you can go through the car wash AND use the self service vacuums for the inside. All I'm finding on Yellow Pages is the 'hand wash while you wait' services and I don't have the cash to pay someone to do it. Central or southside preferably. It's my mum's car and she's going to disown me if I return it in its current messy state.

Mood: hopeful.
Happy new year, Brisneylanders! Hope you all had a great [albeit soggy] NYE, and are having positive thoughts on 2010 :o)

Today's question isn't strictly Brisbane related, but I'm hoping for some recommendations for small group accommodation anywhere out of Brisbane. I'm looking for;
- a lodge/house with the ability to sleep at least 8 people, possibly up to 10
- no more than 2.5hrs out of Brisbane, in any direction [north, south, west]. If it is totally spectacular and cheap, I would consider heading over the border to NNSW
- must have a reasonable kitchen, with facilities to cook for the 8-10 people
- I'm only looking for one night, maybe two if it is super cheap. I would like to spend no more than $500-700 for the one night, but it would be great if I could find one available for a weekend for that price!

Even if you can't offer advice for my specifications, if you have any good websites to check out, or any pretty areas that I can hunt down a house in, that would be fantastic. I've already checked out Stayz.com, which seems to be a bit more expensive than what I'm looking for! I'm hoping to do this in late Feb/early March, which appears to be off-season for pricing.

Subject:Auditions: Reincarnation
Posted by:peterchayward.
Time:8:36 pm.
Hey guys! I'm doing some more Brisbane-based filming this month. This one is being made for YouTube, so I'll link to it here when it's finished. In the meantime, I'm looking for actors - if you know anyone who might be interested, could you let them know about this? Cheers!

-------

Auditions:

Ham and Jam Productions is looking for comedic actors! In January of this year, Ham and Jam is filming a YouTube sitcom, to be distributed via YouTube throughout 2010. Successful applicants will have their talents showcased in an easily shareable format, and DVD copies will also be available. This is a great opportunity to be seen locally, nationally and world-wide, as well as looking fantastic on any resume/filmography.

Please note that all roles are unpaid.

Project title: REINCARNATION
Producers: Peter C. Hayward and Gavin Core

Reincarnation is a callback to the sitcoms of the 1960s; Tom is a boy of 25, with a small circle of friends, a girlfriend, and a car named Jeff, whom he treats as a best friend and confidant. One day, Jeff turns from a car into a human, and Tom attempts to help him to adapt to human life. The show is based around the relationship between Tom and Jeff, and Jeff's attempts to fit in with human society.

The show will be filmed on location in Brisbane. Actors' out of pocket expenses will be covered, and food will be provided on set.

Roles:
*LEANNE (18-25)
Leanne is the girlfriend of the main character, Tom. She is easy-going and funny, not taking anything too seriously, always ready to have a laugh. She's attractive and light-hearted, and Tom is far more interested in Leanne than Leanne is in him.

Leanne is one of the central characters, and will be required for several days of filming.

*JOE, TOM'S DAD (45+)
Joe is Tom's quirky father. A much smaller role, Joe only appears in a few short (but memorable) scenes. Joe's character will be chosen based not on physical appearance, but on comedic timing, and screen relationship with Tom.

Joe will be required only for one or two days of filming.

*THE DOCTOR (30+)
The show is told through Tom's sessions with a doctor, who doesn't appear on-screen until the final episode. The doctor can be of any age. The successful applicant will be based on voice; how much expression and authority can be conveyed purely through vocal work.

If you're interested in being involved in Ham and Jam Production's latest production, please email filmography/resume to peter@thechainsawblokes.com. Headshots are requested, but not required.
Filming will take place throughout January.

We will be auditioning on Thursday and Saturday of this week (the 7th and the 9th) so please contact us as soon as possible, so we can schedule you in and send a copy of the audition text.

Sincerely,
Peter C. Hayward,
Ham and Jam Productions

There's a 100 metre oil slick on the river and it looks like it is coming from the Mirimar II cruise boat moored next to the Story Bridge. I've called the city council and they're contacting the appropriate authorities, harbourmaster etc.

It's likely to be flammable and will kill many animals and poison ecosystems in the Brisbane River.

I'm rather upset about this, thinking of all the animals and plants it will kill. Annoyed too.

It started out such a nice walk, but I had to stop and come home to make the calls.

I'm moving house and unearthed my old stamp collection while cleaning out the cupboards. I have no use for it, but I apparently had a good number of stamps and thought I'd see if anyone wanted them before I threw them out. There's a mixture of Australian and international ones - some are in album sheets, most are loose or still on the envelope scrap.

If there are any takers, I'm willing to mail them to you :) Please give them a home!

EDIT: Since I saw the first 3 comments at the same time, I figure I'll just split them :). My email is eff_one_eleven@hotmail.com if you want to shoot me your mailing addresses and I'll send them out on Monday :)

Hey kids,
Thank you all for the help you've given in my previous posts/questions.

Any recommendations?

Thanks again!

Edit to be more specific.
Not looking for a sushi train, in my opinion vegetarian sushi is bad. Not looking for ultra cheap, i do want something that's quite decent but not over the top price wise.

The website is:

There's a list of different regions to pick from as well so you don't have to drive for miles to actually use the vouchers.

So please, take a look and seriously consider donating. It's for an excellent cause and it's excellent value for money.

Subject:Can you sing in harmony? Read on!
Posted by:dragonflysakura.
Time:12:55 am.
Mood: curious.
Hey Brisneylanders!

Since arriving back in the town of my birth a few weeks ago, I have been thirsting for the opportunity to sing in a group again. I've done my time in choirs - the eisteddfod-winning kind, and the community kind alike as well as youth-choir conducting. I'm not really sure I want to go down the whole big-choir road again - however I think I'd like to investigate the whole small a-capella group thing. How small? I don't really know - anything from 3 to 10 I suppose. I have a background in conducting and choral music as well as musical theatre, however I'm not looking to recruit choristers per se. Right now - I'm putting out feelers to any experienced harmony singers (any age/sex), who would like to be involved in such a group.

No expectations and certainly no obligations - at the very least it would be great to meet some likeminded people who are as passionate about singing and harmony as I am. I don't know where it's going - or what it's going to look like - I just want to be a part of it - and after extensive googling, Brisbane is lacking on googleable a capella opportunities.

Leave a comment or drop me a line at erica@dragonflysakura.com

Ciao! :) xo

Time:3:40 pm.
Hey!! Hope everyone had a great holiday!!

I'm looking for a couch/lounge for our tiny living room. Currently we have two couches and a recliner but it makes the room look really crowded. I'm hoping to find a sectional couch, specifically an L-shaped one with corner seating if that makes any sense as I'm not sure what they're called. I'm hoping a sectional will give us enough seating but make the lounge area look less crowded. Does anyone have one they're willing to pass along or sell for cheap? Or know of  a place that sells them for ultra cheap as I can't really afford anything too pricey and so far every place I've looked has things that don't even come close to my price range. I've asked on freecycle, but haven't really gotten any responses except for one couch that unfortunately wasn't suitable.

Thanks in advance! *keeps fingers crossed*

Also, while I'm here - anyone know of a good, affordable carpet cleaning service? I was gonna rent from Woolies/Coles and do it myself but neither place offers rentals anymore. I'm in Annerley.   GOT ONE!!

Does anyone have any good places to suggest looking for wedding rings? In the city or Indro preferably, but I can travel. Am probably going with something non-traditional, or if traditional, very minimalist. Any recommendations for what will wear well over time would be good too, or hell, if you have a pretty awesome wedding tattoo or necklace, I'm open to those ideas too :P.

I've never shopped for 'real' jewellery in my life, I don't exactly have a budget but I'm not looking for a giant rock. Any places to find nice man rings (that don't look like every other one out there) is also great. I'm contemplating a claddagh ring in white gold, possibly titanium for him, but want to see something in person rather than just order online.

To people on my flist -- this in no way consitutes an official announcement, I'm just looking for information, I promise ;).

Subject:Big Day Out Parking
Posted by:charma_10.
Time:9:10 pm.
Happy Monday night, [info]brisneyland !

I know this is technically a Gold Coast question, but seriously, it's 45 mins down the road, so I thought I'd try :-)

After being ridiculously lucky and scoring a last-minute, NOT $300 ticket to Big Day Out through a friend of someone on this community (BTW, THANK YOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU!) I now find myself wondering where on earth I am going to park my car. I'm a first time attendee and will need to drive down for a number of reasons (the most evil being that I have to start work at 5am Monday morning), so I have no idea where to park, how much it is, or how early I need to get there to GET said car park!

I don't mind having a small walk, but the closer the better (purely because I will be walking back to my car after 11pm at night by myself and I'd rather NOT put myself in a serious situation).

I know Griffith University is very close and that the Nathan Campus has parking tickets that you can just buy daily. Does the Gold Coast campus have anything like this that I might be able to take advantage of if I wake up and get there nice and early?

I've done some reserach online, but nothing has been definitive enough to make me feel comfortable with the idea of driving down.

Any help you can offer me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
